Mitsubishi Rayon have announced today the signing of a joint study of carbon fibre business in ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

Both companies are expecting a high growth of carbon fibre demand in South East Asia where local demand still remains high and both believe that Thailand will be the main strategic location for their new facility due to its fully developed automotive industry.

The joint study will target downstream businesses in automotive, energy (natural gas and renewable energy), civil engineering and infrastructure.

MRC and PTT anticipate up to 100 billion JPY worth of sales in carbon fibre composites by 2020 in the region. The joint study will include an evaluation of potential demands for carbon fibre in Thailand and the South East Asia region together with the feasibility study of new carbon fibre and its composites plant in Thailand. At the early stages, the joint collaboration will mainly focus on exploring automotive part and pressure vessel demands however both companies believe that low-cost natural gas containers made of extremely strong and lightweight carbon fibre composites are the key technological breakthrough which will contribute to the transportation sector, unfolding the possibility to maximise fuel efficiency globally. Both companies expect to conclude the joint study by the end of 2013.

Mitsubishi Rayon is one of the largest carbon fibre manufacturers in the world and continues to grow by expanding its capacity to meet global demand for carbon fibre products. A joint collaboration with PTT enhances MRC to globalize its manufacturing capability and support Asian customer base. MRC’s expertise in manufacturing carbon fibre composites will be contributed to joint collaboration.

Toray Industries have announced that it has agreed to purchase the entire stake in Dome Carbon Magic Ltd. Toray plan to make the company a wholly owned subsidiary in order to expand its carbon fibre composite materials business in the automobile and other applications. Toray will rename the company to Toray Carbon Magic Co., Ltd.

At the same time, the company will also acquire a 75% stake in Dome Composites (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and make it a subsidiary, which Toray plans to rename as Carbon Magic (Thailand) Co., Ltd.

Dome Carbon Magic was established in 1995 as a manufacturing company of DOME CO., LTD. to produce carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts for racing cars. DCM’s expertise in design engineering, prototype proposal and high precision technology, acquired through its experience in design and manufacturing of racing car parts, is highly respected in the market. The company has been producing a number of CFRP parts in a wide range of fields not limited to automobile applications.

Thai production base DCT was established in 2005 as a joint venture with Saha Group, a major local consumer goods conglomerate, for mass production of CFRP parts. Since then, DCT has been mass-producing products using autoclave technology and steadily expanding its business.

Toray is currently developing products as well as design and manufacturing technology of carbon fibre composite materials located in its Nagoya Plant. In Europe, the company in 2008 took a stake in ACE Advanced Composite Engineering, which develops and manufactures CFRP parts based on resin transfer molding (RTM) technology, while establishing in 2011 Euro Advanced Carbon Fiber Composites in a joint venture with Daimler AG for manufacturing and distributing CFRP parts in a bid to strengthen and enhance the supply chain of carbon fibre composite materials for automobile applications.

The acquisition of DCM enhances Toray’s CFRP parts design technology, by securing a manufacturing foothold for carbon fibre composite materials in Thailand, which is the center of ASEAN auto industry and a nation whose government is planning to attract aircraft-related industries, Toray will not only have a competitive global supply chain to offer to its customers but also take on the economic growth of the region.

Through its wholly-owned subsidiary Lincoln Composites, Hexagon Composites has been awarded a new contract to supply 55 lightweight Titan transport modules to SC Group in Thailand. This represents the largest single Titan contract to date for Hexagon Composites worldwide.

SC Group is an integrated logistics services in Thailand. The Thai state-owned oil and gas company PTT Public Company Limited has recently contracted SC Group to transport CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) using the lightweight Titan transport modules.

The contract will generate strong activity in Lincoln Composites for Q3 2012.

On a global scale, Thailand represents the largest market for road transportation of natural gas from pipeline-connected mother stations to NGV fuelling daughter stations. Over 1,500 steel trailers presently operate in the country. With its significantly lighter weight and substantially larger transport capacity, the Titan has proven to reduce fuel consumption by more than 60% compared with conventional steel trailer technology.

The Titan tank is based around a Filament wound epoxy-carbon fibre composites shell with a Polyurethane coating applied to the outer surface to enhance the abrasion and scuff resistance of the container, as well as acts as a moisture protection layer. The tank is designed to transport compressed natural gas, hydrogen, nitrogen and helium and can be mounted to a ISO 1496 shipping container. The module weighs 14,500 kg unpressurised and can be transported via rail, truck or ship.
